Members reflected on whether avoiding scratching or touching scalp sores from prurigo nodularis can actually help them heal, with the consensus being that while it does break the itch-scratch cycle in theory, healing takes a very long time and lesions often remain below the surface, ready to flare again. Several members shared helpful strategies including NAC supplements (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) at 600mg twice daily to reduce itching, visualization techniques to interrupt the urge to scratch, and treatments like Dupixent for widespread cases. A recurring theme was the deeply frustrating and persistent nature of the condition, with some members experiencing nodules that never fully resolve even after many years, alongside concerns about hair loss and the emotional toll of feeling unable to stop picking despite knowing the harm it causes.

In theory, yes, if you don't scratch or pick at them, the cycle of itch/scratch is supposed to be interrupted. However, in my experience, it takes a very long time for them to heal. I think the NAC has helped me to break the cycle although I wish I never had ON in the first place.

What else has the dermatologist recommended? NAC supplement has really helped with the itchiness. I hope Dupixent works for you!

I found that visualization works. When I want to itch/scratch, I visualize my dermatologist's face and the urge stops! I know that sounds funny but it's working for me!

NAC is also known as N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine. My dermatologist recommended it to help stop the itching associated with PN. I purchased the Nutracost brand which is vegan. It can be purchased on Amazon. The recommended dosage is 600 mg twice a day. It has really helped me.
