A survey of people living with PN found that nearly half experienced pain every day, with most describing it as moderate to severe. The pain in PN is believed to be linked to how the immune system and nervous system interact. Inflammation can affect nerve cells, leading to nerve pain (also called neuropathic pain). This happens because damaged nerves can't send the correct pain signals to the brain.
Waking up in pain could also be connected to nighttime itching, which is common with PN. The urge to scratch during sleep can irritate nodules, leading to soreness and discomfort when you wake up.
