It's really frustrating to feel unheard, especially when you're dealing with something as uncomfortable as PN. You're not alone in this — many MyPrurigoTeam members have shared similar struggles getting a clear diagnosis. One member shared that a doctor told them they had scabies, and another was repeatedly told it was acne or dermatitis before finally getting the right answer.
Getting a PN diagnosis can genuinely be a long and winding road, and it's okay to push for more answers. Here are some of the diagnostic tools that can help get a more specific result:
- Skin biopsy with histology — A punch biopsy looks at skin cells under a microscope for signs like thickened skin (hyperkeratosis), inflammation, and increased keratin, which are common in PN
- Immunofluorescence testing — A staining technique that identifies specific proteins in the skin sample, helping to rule out other conditions
- Blood tests — These check immune cell levels and organ function to see if anything else may be contributing to your symptoms
- Patch testing — Can rule out allergic reactions as a cause of itching
It may be worth asking your dermatologist specifically about these tests, or seeking a second opinion from a dermatologist who has experience with PN. You deserve specific answers, not guesswork.

I spent 38 years seeing docs and asking for help. A few months ago I caught a staph infection...given clindamycin...and it cleared up all my other skin issues also. That was a big part of finally getting diagnosed. That plus a new dermatologist...a young one , new...wirhnew ideas

My biopsy showed I had PN. But I sometimes wonder if there is also something else going on . Some of my lesions are different than others.
