Could a memory foam cooling pillow be affecting your scalp with prurigo nodularis? That's a really thoughtful question to ask!
The cooling side could actually be a positive thing. Cold compression is recommended to help relieve scalp itching — similar to applying an ice pack or cold, wet cloth to an itchy area for relief. However, there are a couple of things worth considering about your pillow:
- Heat and humidity are known triggers for PN itching — so if the non-cooling side traps heat, it could potentially worsen symptoms
- Fabric materials can also be a trigger — certain fabrics like polyester may irritate sensitive skin
- Pillow covers or cases with fragrances or irritating ingredients in detergents could also be a factor
It may be worth checking what material the pillow cover is made from, and washing it with a fragrance-free detergent if you aren't already.
Sharing your experience with others who have PN is a great idea — hearing what has or hasn't worked for others can be really valuable. It's also worth mentioning any scalp concerns to your dermatologist, who can help pinpoint triggers specific to you.

Good morning, I am curious to see if this brings up a good discussion. Can’t wait to hear what others think as well! Thanks for your input.

Hi Shawn! I would say that yes, it could. My dermatologist and I had a discussion about scalp PN. They informed me that sweating during the night can exacerbate PN. I use a fan at night while I sleep. In the summer, I use my hair dryer to dry my scalp. I'm thinking the memory foam could cause sweat. Since I use Derma Smooth at night, I cover my pillow with a towel so as not to stain the pillow or pillowcase.
