Members shared helpful options for managing Prurigo Nodularis on the scalp, with several recommending shampoos like Head and Shoulders Bare, Ketoconazole 2%, tea tree oil shampoo, and Vichy Dercos as starting points. Prescription treatments like Derma Smooth and Clobetasol liquid were also mentioned as options provided by dermatologists for scalp lesions. A recurring theme was the importance of resisting the urge to pick at nodules, as doing so can cause infection and hair loss, and that stress reduction plays a key role in managing flare-ups.

I think that whatever is used on one's scalp should be affordable and readily available.

Hi Roger! I use Head and Shoulders Bare formulation because it has minimal ingredients. It's offered in anti-itch and hydrating. There also is a shampoo/conditioner combination. This very website was where I received the information. I also have a prescription topical medication for my scalp: Derma Smooth which I use at bedtime if I have scalp lesions. Please don't did at the lesions thinking that they will heal faster if they are "opened up.". Please don't dig at them on your skin either.

Hi Nellie, picking at the scalp lesions could lead to hair loss and infection. I use Head and Shoulders Bare shampoo daily. I also am trying tea tree oil shampoo. My dermatologist prescribed Derma Smooth at bedtime and Clobetesol liquid 0.05% for during the day. Before I was diagnosed, I thought that opening the lesions up would heal them quickly. Wrong strategy! The nodules will be more painful if you pick or dig at them. It is because they are deep in the skin. It is frustrating. If you can find something else to do in order to distract yourself, that would be in your favor. My dermatologist informed me that stress reduction is extremely important because stress exacerbates PN.

Thats quite new to me ( Derma Smooth) I got red open sores. They are so huge. When I feel them. I gross out and pick it wide open. Its just remains there. I need a shampoo that relieves my sores on the scalp. Hurting alot cause of these Prurigo Nodules. I wish I knew what these are and what is the cure. This has been with me for 20 years. Gosh this is ridiculous.
